Chelsea FC Best Ever XI

Chelsea FC Best Ever XI

Goal Keeper

Peter Bonnetti was a very good goal keeper as was Peter Borota and you can put Dimitri Kharine, Carlo Cudicini and Dave Beasant in that category but Petr Cech would have to win my vote as best ever goal keeper for Chelsea.

Right Back

Gary Sillett, Ken shellito, Gary Locke and Dave Webb were good right backs. "Super" Dan Petrescu, was a fabulous wing back but unfortunately he could not defend, Steve Clarke was extremely reliable and Albert Ferrer was decent but I would have to go for Ron "chopper" Harris as the best right back.

Left back

Graeme Le Saux, Ashley Cole, and Wayne Bridge are all worthy mentions but I have gone for Eddie McCreadie.

Centre backs

Frank Lebouef was a very decent ball playing defender, but maybe let down by his defensive qualities. Gary Chivers and Colin Pates were very good defenders.

William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho would definitely have been in my team if not the two that I have actually picked. But my 2 centre backs are Marcel Desailly and John Terry.

Midfield

There have been lots of good players in Chelsea midfield and I have gone for 3 players in the midfield. Players like Michael Essien, Ray Wilkins, Gus Poyet, Roberto Di Matteo, Dennis Wise, Clive Walker and John Bumstead deserve mentions.

But I have gone for Claude Makelele who is 1 of the most useful players ever to have in any team, Frank Lampard for his goal and running power and Alan Hudson for his creativity

Forward/Strikers

I have also gone for 3 players and I have to pay homage to players like Kerry Dixon, Gianluca Vialli, Mark Hughes, Arjen Robben, Joe Cole, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Eidur Gudjohnssen and Bobby Tambling but I have picked Didier Drogba for his power and unselfishness, Peter Osgood and the best player to have ever played for Chelsea and that's Gianfranco Zola for his genius.

Chelsea Set to Dominate European Football

Chelsea Set to Dominate European Football

There is a new heavyweight force in European football, they are being bankrolled seemingly by the Russian economy, they mean business, and their name is Chelsea F.C. Chelsea Football Club have always been a decent club in the second strata of English clubs. In London alone Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have invariably been ahead of the Chelsea Blues, even West Ham have often put Chelsea in the shade. But no longer, for in the season 2004-2005, Chelsea won the English Premier League title for the first time in fifty years, their only previous winning season.

But they haven’t stopped there, in the new season 2005-2006 they are already well clear in the title race leaving all their rivals gasping, and now they have set their sights on the pinnacle of all the club trophys, the European Champions League. Chelsea have never won the Champions League, indeed no London club ever has. And it is clear that their charismatic manager Jose Mourinho is intent on winning the Champions League again, he did so with his previous club Porto, of Portugal.

So what of the traditional English giants? Manchester United, often described as the world’s richest football club, have fallen into the hands of the Glazer family of Tampa Bay fame, but they reportedly needed to borrow half a billion pounds to buy United, a debt the club now shoulders. Spending on new players has so far been thin on the ground and United’s brusque Glaswegian manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has admitted that United, for so long England’s most successful club, cannot compete with Chelsea when it comes to buying players. The hordes of United fans are not amused, the natives are growing restless.

Arsenal, London’s biggest and most successful club, lost their skipper and driving force Patrick Vieira last summer, he moved to Juventus in Italy for £12 million pounds and with their star striker Thierry Henry suffering fitness problems, they picked up some uncharacteristic defeats at unfashionable clubs like West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough. This is their last season at their famous old Highbury Stadium before they move to their new purpose built Emirates stadium almost next door. The increased capacity of 60,000 will undoubtedly give their French manager Arsene Wenger more money to spend next year, but of course they have to pay for that new ground too. Far from challenging Chelsea again, it would seem that Arsenal are more likely to fall further behind.

That leaves Liverpool and Newcastle. News comes through just today that the American Kraft Company and family are interested in investing in Liverpool F.C., perhaps even buying the club outright just like Manchester United fifty miles up the road, but that is some way down the line. And they too are seeking to build a brand new stadium on Stanley Park and of course that all costs big money. Despite last year’s freakish win in the Champion’s League, Liverpool’s league form this season has again been patchy, and that included a 4-1 walloping by Chelsea on their own Anfield pitch. The idea that Liverpool might challenge Chelsea for the title remains a far-fetched one. Newcastle, England’s second best supported club are gradually improving, and they have signed England’s centre forward Michael Owen, but they still remain unconvincing at the top level. They haven’t won the title since Noah was seen building his ark, or so it seems, and they aren’t going to do so this season either.

So though it is very popular for foreign investors to snap up the leading English (and Scottish) football clubs, it appears that only Roman Abramovich at Chelsea has the financial muscle to buy the best players around. He is the only one to put unlimited funds on the table. Top class players now command a transfer fee of £40 million each and whereas Manchester United might afford one of them a season, Chelsea’s purse seems bottomless. They have already spent £220+ million and are still in the market to buy again when the transfer window re-opens in January.

They have already achieved success by winning at home, now the European Champion’s League is the Holy Grail for them, a trophy they are now the outright favourites to win with the odds layers. And astonishingly they have achieved their success to date with an array of strikers who haven’t really cut the mustard. Mutu the Romanian, was promptly sacked for drug taking, Crespo the Argentinian, was sent out to Milan on loan last season, and though he is back now he is hardly setting the world afire,or even playing that often, Gudjohnson an Icelander, plays more often than not, the muscular Drogba from the Ivory Coast, seems to have finally claimed the number nine shirt as his own, yet many blues followers still remain unconvinced about him, so it would seem likely that Chelsea may yet be looking for another proven goal scorer come January, especially after a recent rare defeat at Manchester United.

It would take a brave man to back against Chelsea in any competition at the moment. But if you’d like to, you can still have a free $30 dollar bet at Betfair.com by entering the code 6CHE3VPWJ when prompted. But one thing is for sure; no one would be surprised if this time next year the Premier League trophy AND the Champions League trophy were both on display in the Chelsea boardroom. It seems that only the Italian giants Milan and Juventus, and the Spanish top two, Real Madrid, and most especially Barcelona with their Brazilian superstar, surely soon to be the world player of the year, Ronaldinho, might stop the London blues. It really does seem as if we have entered a new era in European and world football, or if you prefer the ridiculous name that no one ever uses, Soccer. Chelsea fans have never had it so good while everyone else is left gasping in their wake, for it is a fact that Chelsea Football Club have raised the bar for everyone else to follow. Time will tell if anyone can.

Chelsea Soccer

Chelsea soccer has been a great part of countless football fans in Europe. This is mainly because of the Chelsea Football Club which has been a key team in the European Tournaments. This football team is based on West London and was established more than a hundred years ago. It has had its years of success and remains a top contender in the Premier League. It has achieved four FA Cups, Three league titles, two UEFA Cup Winner's Cups and four League Cups. At Chelsea, a lot of players have come and gone but the spirit of the respected team remains.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea football club in June 2003 from Ken Bates. The reported amount of the purchase was 140 million pounds which was at the time the most expensive sale in English soccer history. The club's coach at that time, Italian Claudion Raniers, who took Chelsea to the 2002 FA Cup final and Champions League qualification was initially retained but was later sacked for being unable to get titles for the team. Successful coach Jose Mourinho from Portugal then took over as Chelsea's new guide.

The home field of this famous soccer club is the Stamford Bridge Football stadium which is located in Fulham in West London. The players of Chelsea wear royal blues shirts with white socks. The club's traditional symbol is a lion that holds a staff but was modified in 2005.

Loyal fans just can't get enough of Chelsea soccer. The club's game is characterized by endless and strong will to win. By the way they play, the team has a great chance to even improve despite its already rich and colorful history.

Chelsea FC Stadium Tour

After so many visits to London I finally got the opportunity to do the tour of Chelsea Football Club's stadium. Chelsea FC, for those who have been living under a rock, is one of the top teams in England's Premier League and arguably world's most famous football team. Equally famous is "Stamford Bridge", the home of chelsea FC.

If you are in London I highly recommend the Chelsea FC Stadium tour at Stamford Bridge, particularly since most of us can no longer afford to go to games; the cheapest tickets of this much loved team are around 100 pounds. Even if you are a non-football (soccer) fan its still worth going just to see the difference in the Chelsea Team's dressing room and with what they give their opponents to change in.

The stadium (Stamford Bidge) is the most centrally located of all the London football clubs and is easily accessible by the London Bus & the tube (Fulham tube station). The guided tour cost 15 pounds/person which also includes admission to the Chelsea Museum and takes about couple of hours.

You start the tour at the Chelsea Musuem and go through the press room, Home & Away changing rooms before entering the stadium through the players tunnel.

The team's changing rooms, were surprisingly basic. Each locker in the home changing room was hung with its owner's shirt. Our tour guide opened the locker of "Ballack" and let us take a peak into it. The lockers are clustered by player's common language.

Next came the moment that was for me the highlight of the visit. You walk out of the players tunnel onto the field to the sound of the roaring crowd. (imagination of course, it was an empty stadium, but still...). I had wondered if a tour of an empty stadium (no crowd, no footballers) would feel a bit, well, empty. But it turned out to be more exciting than the game I had been to last year when Chelsea visited California as part of their US tour.

The Chelsea Shirt - One Hundred and Four Years of History

The Chelsea Shirt - One Hundred and Four Years of History

Chelsea Football Club, affectionately nicknamed "The Blues" are a professional football club in England. They play in the elite Premiership and are one of the most successful teams in the history of English football. They have been English League Champions three times and have won the FA cup on four occasions.

Chelsea's home ground is Stamford Bridge in Fulham, West London. They have played there since the team was founded in 1905. On a slightly pedantic note of geographical accuracy, Chelsea are not actually based in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, rather in Hammersmith and Fulham. Chelsea FC was founded in March 1905 in the Rising Sun pub opposite Stamford Bridge. They occupied Stamford Bridge shortly afterwards, taking over the site from the London Athletics Club which had used the facility for the previous 28 years.

The Chelsea Shirt for home games has always been blue, although it was not always the same dark shade it is today. The strip was finished with white shorts and blue socks. In 1912, royal blue shirts were introduced. The now familiar blue shorts were added by Tommy Docherty in the 1960s. White socks were also added at this time as it was thought that this scheme, not in use by any other club made Chelsea more distinctive. The away kit is typically all yellow or all white, however this has gone through some interesting deviations over the years. The first away shirt comprised black and white stripes. In the 1980s a bizarre mint green kit was sported by the Chelsea players. The 1990s saw the Chelsea shirt for away games at its most distinctive with red and white checks, and a grey and tangerine colour scheme all being tried. Large numbers of sponsors have graced the front of the Chelsea shirt over the years. These have included Gulf Air, Coors and most latterly Samsung.

The club crest attached to the Chelsea shirt has gone through four major iterations during the history of the club. The initial crest design was based around the image of a Chelsea Pensioner. This gave rise to the club's nickname of "The Pensioners". This crest was in use for fifty years when the design was changed as part of a modernization program going on at the club. A temporary solution was to use the C.F.C initials for a year until in 1953 when the new crest of a blue lion locking backwards and holding a staff was introduced. This crest took it's inspiration from the coat of arms of the Borough Of Chelsea. The crest also featured two footballs and three red roses. This was the first crest to appear on the Chelsea shirt, which was unadorned until this time. Another bout of modernisation in 1986 saw the heraldic lion replaced by a more realistic looking lion in yellow standing over the C.F.C initials. The final big design change came in 2004 where the old design was reinstated for the approaching centenary. This design has appeared on the shirts in different colour schemes. such as white and gold.

It is to be hoped that this brief article has given an interesting background into the shirt and crest of one of England's most successful and famous teams.

Chelsea Football Club - Money Talks in Football

Chelsea Football Club - Money Talks in Football

Chelsea football club are one of the top sides of the English Premier League. They are the play thing of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and in recent times his money has brought the club success. They are a London team that is based at the Stamford Bridge football stadium. They are currently managed by Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Owner Roman Abramovich is someone that wants the best in everything he does and so since his arrival at Stamford Bridge if you don't perform you are out! The most successful times in the history of Chelsea FC came under the reign of Jose Maurinho who stayed with the club for a 2-3 year period. He claimed 2 domestic titles for the club in successive seasons and made 2 Champions League semi finals. Unfortunately disagreements between Maurinho and Abramovich lead to his departure.

Abramovich purchased Chelsea back in 2003 in a deal worth £140 million. The club had debts of around £80 million which Abramovich was to write off once the deal had gone through. At the time Chelsea were one of the better sides in English football but were still a fair way off the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. Abramovich appointed manager Jose Maurinho who was the current Champions League champion with FC Porto and together they planned to make Chelsea into something special.

Abramovich wanted up and coming players, not superstars and it was this idea that lead Chelsea to success. Along with the takeover Abramovich purchased Juan Sebastian Veron from Manchester United for £15 million, Claude Makelele from Real Madrid for £14 million, Damien Duff from Blackburn Rovers for £17 million and Joe Cole and Glen Johnson from West Ham for £6.6 million and £6 million. That is a shopping bill of around £110 million.

But the plan worked. In the first season under new control Chelsea dominated the English Premier League and went on to take two straight domestic titles and did it in style. They have been a footballing superpower ever since. The UEFA Champions League title is now the prize that Abramovich lusts after. It is the one title that eludes him and he will do everything in his power get this.

Chelsea FC - So Near, So Far gold

Chelsea FC - So Near, So Far gold

Five of the Champions League semifinals in the last six years. As Chelsea, this is the new director, Carlo Ancelotti, said in her first interview, which is a wonderful implementation. However, it is apparently not quite good enough. The fact that these five have a miserable semifinal appearance should be a source of incredible frustration for billionaire owner of Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, the club and fans - even if some of them might.

The reason that long-standing Chelsea fans perhaps a little philosophical about "only" reached the finals in five attempts is that many of them are probably even more difficult to become accustomed to a challenge for all the honor. Until 1997, when Chelsea won the FA Cup, the club won nothing, for 26 years - unless the admission of the former second title. Chelsea's wealth in the 1980s, after the takeover by Ken Bates for the sum of £ 1, fell, as they are in the vicinity of English football the third level.

But what he found in the last decade of the century. Even before the arrival of Abramovich in 2003, restoration began. The operators of the genealogy of Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Claudio Ranieri all helped the club to one of the leading ensembles in England and the FA Cup win was in 1997 and 2000 and the UEFA Cup Cup winner 1998. Chelsea have been ground time of circuit breakers in many ways - from their continent and their managers overseas players in particular - as the first club, the area with a team without a single player from the United Kingdom or Ireland in a template against Southampton the 1999th

And if the Russian oil magnate, in the Champions League winner José Mourinho support the team in 2004, almost everyone believes that "special", a task force.

And it has emerged. The Premier League to win, so the FA Cup once and the League Cup (twice). March 2004, the team has a new record to start 86 games in which they remained unbeaten in their area of Stamford Bridge.

With some of the best players from England - John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley and Joe Cole - and with a little tension imports - Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack and Nicolas Anelka - and the world has been waiting for Saturday trophies on. And especially for the "Holy Grail" Abramovich wants so that UEFA Champions League.

And yet, in the last two seasons, Chelsea have flattered to deceive - and their followers as frustrated. There are occasions where they are so powerful that it also has the strongest opponent, almost intimidating because of their physical and mental template superiority. But it seems, has a serious flaw in the club of make-up, no longer with them this last breakthrough.

Some have said that there are some players from overseas are not sufficiently engaged, but they have their passion and commitment after the loss of the controversy in Barcelona in 2009, these players have been criticized for the lack of sportsmanship.

Some leaders accused each other they are not in a position to the "big" players - as if there was never a problem for someone like Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Some have even blamed Abramovich or losing patience with Mourinho too early in the year 2007 seems a part of his enthusiasm for the club a long time.

But now, not been successful from the admirable Guus Hiddink to stay with the club after the rejuvenation of the team in his short stay in, Chelsea has someone with the Champions League trophy twice as a player and two as a manager. While Stamford Bridge - a marvel of air pollution in your football field in comparison to other more "soul-less" to the stadiums - are in a position to something that the most optimistic fans would have thought possible twenty years ago, a team can win the Champions League.

When Carlo Ancelotti can not be the trophy, on earth, where, after the next step?

finals of the FA between Everton and Chelsea

An epic season reached its climax on Saturday

A national epic season reached its climax on Saturday with the finals of the FA between Everton and Chelsea. The buyers of Chelsea index for the propagation of a priori from the start of the tournament will be pleased that the spread from the outset to 89-91 points (100 points for the winner, 70 points for the runner-up), and love to Hiddink rewarded them with a victory on his part, the Blues on the season. Chelsea with a game spread index 16-17.5 points (25 points won the game, 10 points for the pressure) and Everton is just 6-7.5 points, the players are on the left no doubt in the team, which is the darling of the game. Buyer for Everton's victory spread index will be absolutely delighted that Steven Pienaar and Phil Neville were both in the form, while the buyer of the spread like Chelsea see Frank Lampard and sat back in the team.

Buyer and seller, the U.S. spread is 0.7-0.9 for Chelsea, should remember that only two of the last ten finalists were of sanctions, although the two have been over the last four years (2005 and 2006). Supremacy spreading weather also that since 1999, a goal or less separate teams of seven of the last ten finalists. The higher profit at the moment is three goals in 2004 the biggest ever victory margin in an FA Cup final, four gates. Seller, the U.S. expansion may know, is the result of this flight - no less than Chelsea against Manchester United in 1994.

In view of the experience in the finals of the FA Cup, The Toffee have an impressive 12 appearances against Chelsea eight pages to the start of the tournament. Chelsea won the last two years ago, and sellers with all the objectives of the dissemination, 2.1 can remember that they did not win the trophy in extra time, after the usual opening times of arrival, without a goal. The same spread sellers are happy to know that Chelsea and Everton two meetings of the league this season were the two goalless, but the buyer of the need not to spread panic - the last time they met in the FA Cup for the fourth game in Stamford Bridge, the result was 4:1 for Chelsea. This spread players trying to get in the objectives of the internal market should also note, the highest game ever Show in 1953, where the Blackpool defeated Bolton 4-3.

Over the past ten finalists of the FA Cup, there were a total of 19 goals in general, with an average of 1.9 goals per game, what should be the total sales targets for the spread of weather. But perhaps, that the buyers are impressed by the fact that only two finalists did not manage a goal and the most goals in six, in this extraordinary finals three years ago when Steven Gerrard has injuries on time with West Ham 3-3 . Interest for the transfer of football betting spread target looks totally minutes 108-118 for the Saturday draw, the final goal minutes Constitution 2006 was a decrease in jaw 291. Sporting Index traders were still disturbed that the Hammers' manager Alan Pardew and.

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 2 INTER 0

Objectives of Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard made it two wins in Pasadena for two days on the zomertoer of America.

José Mourinho managed at an Inter side was always in control from the start dominated both the property and the opportunities that we have expelled from the World Cup challenge in the famous old stadium Rose Bowl, a crowd of 81,224 in attendance, breaking 65289 Chelsea in the American record in Seattle on Saturday.

The goals came early in any medium, Drogba lucky to beat keeper Vid ING with a deflected effort, while Lampard calmly finishing with a fine taken.

Chelsea arrived in LA with a warm reception, not only the sun, but also the thousands of fans at the Rose Bowl, waiting for their hero.

Carlos Ancelotti opted for the African contingent from the start, since they have enough of a pre-season fitness function, and Drogba leading the line with Salomon Kalou, while Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel added Midfield, which was a diamond shape.

These two are united by Florent Malouda and Lampard, who again played just behind the front. In the defense, stepped on Ricardo Carvalho alongside John Terry, while Branislav Ivanovic aligned on the right-back. Ashley Cole and Petr Cech is still left, and back to goal, respectively.

Inter

It took only 10 minutes before Drogba scored to open thanks to a mistake by Inter goalkeeper Vid Ing.

Since so much time and space from 25 meters out, Drogba returns deflected an effort to establish clearly the most difficult things to ING, but he still should have done to save. Instead, he tried for the ball around the post, only to see that creep into his goal.

The lead may be larger, Terry heading over from a corner three minutes and then Goalie Drogba rounding a tight corner, but Kalou found when he withdrew.

The game was not released in the most rapid pace, and after a goal that seems slower. Actually it was an exhibition game even more exciting than the game that was expected.

Lampard drilled a free kick forward ING, while the other end former Arsenal man Patrick Vieira some nimble footwork before Terry can a teen, and clarity.

In the meantime, the two managers choose to make changes. For Chelsea Drogba and Kalou was replaced by Saturday off Anelka and Sturridge as oak gave way to Alex and Deco Malouda replaced.

Inter

Three minutes before the second half was as good as the game ended. Sturridge was again eager to effect, and when he tried to stabbing in the area, the ball was blocked by the arm and Burdisso Referee points to the site.

By strengthening Lampard, side-footing his second fall in as many games for the bottom corner to double the lead.

Inter

Seven minutes later, the change of the party and ruin Lampard during the Inter defense for Anelka paste a. The French could have scored, the ball try to ING on this occasion, but the goalkeeper did well to parry.

Ivanovic saw yellow for a strong challenge before Mario Balotelli in a more intelligent Midfield create a chance for Deco, but the shot was weak and easy to Ing.

The next time was in operation, the Slovenian had to work, this time for Lampard a unit of 25 meters and then to deny Deco, who burst past two challenges.

The changes over time Ancelotti, Ross Turnbull a debut in goal, while Sam Hutchinson Michael Mancienne and replacement of the full back. Lampard, who completed 90 minutes against Seattle, then in the field and looking as fresh as ever.

With seven minutes remaining Inter finally saw a good opportunity to object, and ex-Chelsea Ricardo Quaresma flicked a free man, KicKing away from the message. Zlatan Ibrahimović, rumored to be close to signing for Barcelona, wasted their chances and hit the side netting.

One minute later, the Swedish had a chance on a dead ball, which beaten with poison, but Turnbull was good to see him in his arms.

Finally, with three minutes Lampard was withdrawn, will get a huge applause from the crowd when he was replaced by Franco di Santo.

DROGBA AND CHELSEA FC STATEMENTS

Didier Drogba has asked for this statement to be released on his behalf.

'I was very upset at what happened during the game, but having seen the pictures on TV I accept that I overreacted.

'I also fully accept that the language I used did not set a good example for those watching at home, especially children. I regret that in the heat of the moment I let out my incredible frustration and disappointment in this way, and for that I apologise.'

Chelsea Football Club has issued the following after Didier Drogba's statement:

'Chelsea welcomes Didier's statement today which was made honestly and after reflection. We are all acutely aware of the responsibilities that lie with both the club and its players towards setting a good example as role models.

'While it is clear that some of the events last night were regrettable, they occurred only because of the high emotions and frustrations which arose from the disappointment of a controversial defeat in such an important game.

'We made representations to UEFA immediately after the game and we await their comments following a review of the match officials' report.'

Overview

Chelsea will be desperate to regain the Premier League crown after finishing second to Manchester United in the last two seasons. Former manager Jose Mourinho, bankrolled by owner Roman Abromovich's millions, brought the first title to Stamford Bridge for 50 years when the Blues lifted the trophy in 2005. Chelsea became only the second team to win back-to-back Premier League titles when they clinched it a year later. Mourinho left the club by mutual consent in September 2007.

Although Chelsea reached the FA Cup final in 1994, they hardly set the world alight in their early Premier League days. Ruud Gullit became manager in 1996 and steered the Blues to an FA Cup triumph in 1997, while his successor Gianluca Vialli guided the team to victory in the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup in 1998.

Shortly after, he led the team to the UEFA Super Cup after a 1-0 win over Real Madrid. The FA Cup followed in 2000. Vialli was replaced by Claudio Ranieri in 2000 and he led Chelsea to another FA Cup final appearance in 2002.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the Blues for £140m. After a trophyless season, he appointed Mourinho as new Chelsea manager and there was instant success. In 2005, Chelsea won the Barclays Premiership and League Cup, along with a Champions League semi-final appearance.

And Mourinho retained the Barclays Premiership crown the year after, equalling the club's own Premier League record of 29 wins set the previous season. They were league runners-up in 2006/07 and also claimed the FA Cup and League Cup double.

They were also runners-up in the 2007/08 campaign, but by this time Mourinho had left the club. He was replaced by Avram Grant who led the Blues to the final of the Champions League and Carling Cup.

Grant left Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and was replaced by Luiz Felipe Scolari who will be charged with bringing the title back to the club. However he was sacked in February 2009 and replaced by Guus Hiddink who agreed to take charge until the end of the campaign while continuing to coach the Russian national side.

Club Heritage

Chelsea were formed in 1905 and were elected into the Second Division of the Football League. They just missed out on silverware 10 years later with an FA Cup final defeat. The Blues had to wait for their first major trophy in 1955, when under manager Ted Drake, they won the league title. Chelsea claimed the League Cup for the first time in 1965 and were defeated in the FA Cup final two years later.

Featuring the likes of Ron 'Chopper' Harris, Ian Hutchison and Peter Osgood, Chelsea overcame Leeds to win the FA Cup in 1970. In the following season, they clinched the European Cup Winners' Cup with a replay victory over Real Madrid.

Financial problems meant the Stamford Bridge club dropped into the Second Division, and at one point they were close to falling to the Third Division.

They eventually won their place back in the top flight in 1984, but their stay only lasted four seasons. They clawed their way back to the First Division again as Second Division champions in 1989 and have remained there ever since.
